Treatment for Breakdown

Breakdown due to stress or extreme overwhelm is common, especially during times of uncertainty.

If you have experienced, or are experiencing a nervous breakdown, characterised by intense mental or emotional distress and an inability to function in day-to-day life, we are here to help.

At Khiron Clinics, we understand that a breakdown is indicative of an underlying health problem, such as chronic stress or anxiety. That is why we offer professional care led by our team of expert psychologists; counsellors and therapists.

What is a Breakdown?

When we experience a nervous breakdown, we are experiencing an acute attack of anxiety that significantly impacts our normal functioning in daily life. It feels like a loss of control over our feelings, and a ‘giving up’ in the face of overwhelming experiences of stress and anxiety.

A nervous breakdown is caused by prolonged activity in the body’s stress response, so it is not an illness in itself but a symptom of a deeper issue – a dysregulation in the nervous system, which is why our somatic psychotherapeutic treatment model focuses on healing the body and the nervous system. It is only when we heal the body can we begin to find balance and harmony in the mind.

What are the symptoms of a Breakdown?

A nervous breakdown occurs as a result of prolonged stress with little to no rest time between instances of stress. It is an issue that relates to poor nervous system self-regulation. When our nervous systems are dysregulated (or out of harmony with our environment) it is common to experience symptoms such as depression; anxiety; mood disorders; social withdrawal; physical illness and difficulty sleeping. These are just some of the symptoms – the list of potential symptoms that can arise from a dysregulated nervous system is long and broad.

At Khiron Clinics, we don’t just treat symptoms. We are diligent in the search for the underlying causes that lead to dysregulation in the first place. Treatment plans are individually tailored to best your needs, which makes your active involvement in treatment a vital factor in the healing process.

Expert Breakdown treatment

Our highly skilled clinical team understands that issues related to nervous system functioning most often arise as a result of past traumatic experiences that are held in the body, which lead to dysregulation of the nervous system. Our goal is to work with the body suporting the mind by applying highly successful cutting edge  treatment modalities for anxiety and stress disorders, such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Lifespan Integration and BSP (Brainspotting), and Bodynamic Somatic Developmental Psychology to mention a few, all of which allow us to work with the body, releasing trauma, and relieving related symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.

Also included in our treatment programmes are proven methods of reducing stress-related symptoms and stabilising dysregulated nervous systems, such as mindfulness meditation, breathing techniques; yoga; tai chi; art therapy and fitness classes and equine therapy.
