You will likely feel in partnership with your therapist, giving you time to ask them questions and bounce of ideas throughout your discovery.</span></i></li>

Examples of this include gestalt therapy and existential therapy.</span></li>

Perhaps you were stressed or anxious, and worried about something that happened in the past or could happen in the future. When our thoughts take hold of us, it can feel as though we’re drowning beneath the surface, unable to see where it stops. Other times, it seems that so many thoughts and feelings are present, but we can’t quite place a finger on them – holistic practices such as writing can be extremely beneficial for releasing these thoughts and giving you some space to just breathe. Peter Elbow, a professor, author, and researcher, described the writing process as this: </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: #ffffff; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The consequence [of writing] is that you must start by writing the wrong meanings in the wrong words; but keep writing until you get to the right meanings in the right words. Only in the end will you know what you are saying.” </span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;">
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">There are so many different ways to write, but free writing is completely open. Nothing is on the paper telling you what to do – you simply write. Some consider this type of writing journaling, because it’s the process of you writing down whatever comes to mind. The sentences you create may or may not flow well together, and they may or may not always make sense. Since there is so much that can go on in our mind at once, it’s hard to get everything down – that’s why you take what you can and move forward from there.</span></p>

There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution.”</span></i></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our innate reaction to someone living with depression is simple. We want to make them feel “better”. Society has taught us to always feel and pursue happiness to the point that we often see sadness as a threat- as if someone else being sad might threaten our own ability to be sad or even humans as a whole. Depression in others can make us uncomfortable. Naturally, we’ve experienced sadness, even depression during grief, and taken time to recover from melancholy, hopeless feelings. Still, we “snap out of it” eventually. We are able to take control of our emotions once more, to find the good, and to get back to enjoying life again. Witnessing someone struggle with depression, we struggle to understand depression. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Why can’t they just be happy</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">? What we often don’t realize is that someone living with depression is asking themselves the exact same thing. They want to feel better. They want to live in happiness. They are aware that their pervasive feelings are not only uncomfortable for others, but somewhat shunned by society at large. As a result, people who are living with depression live with an unfortunate amount of shame, which only worsens the experiences of their emotions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We don’t want to say or do the “wrong thing” when we are trying to support someone who is living with depression. The first thing we have to realize is that we cannot change how they are feeling. Despite all of our best efforts, we cannot cure their depression and suddenly cause them to feel better, be happier, or have a different outlook on life. Though depression can be situational, it is also a very real mental health diagnosis which can result from a chemical imbalance. Unfortunately, that is just out of our control. Rather than try to cheer someone with depression up, we honor their experience, meet them where they are, and ask them what they need from us. Bye showing up </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">for </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">someone living with depression, we stop showing them up and emphasizing the shame that they </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">shouldn’t </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">be feeling the way they are feeling. </span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">We can encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle within their ability by eating a well rounded nutritious diet and getting at least 20 minutes of movement per day. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">We can let them know that though we can’t understand what they are going through, we love them and support them with all of our hearts. </span></li>

<h2>Khiron House is delighted to present this important two-day workshop by Dr Bessel van der Kolk</h2>
<p>The evolutionary function of the human brain is to ensure our internal well-being and ability to connect to other human beings. Traumatic experiences, however, change the brain’s priorities: the abili ty to process information and engage with our environments is altered. Individuals become afraid to know what they know or to feel what they feel. Worse yet, they become afraid of other human beings, isolating to feel safe but at the cost of connection and comfort.</p>
<p>This workshop will explore how, because of their altered biological systems and rhythms, traumatized individuals can continue to be trapped by their histories long after the events are past. Current experiences and relationships are misinterpreted by the body as a replay of the past with no conscious connection to the trauma.   With the help of videotapes, this workshop will explore ways to break the cycles of re-enactment and suffering by befriending inner experience.</p>
<p>We will study the action of the newer therapeutic modalities for trauma, all of which emphasize the neurobiological legacy of trauma: mindfulness, EMDR, yoga, Internal Family Systems Therapy, sensorimotor therapy, theatre work, and neurofeedback. With an understanding of how “the body keeps the score,” we can more easily help children and adults overcome a traumatic past and regain the capacity to be fully alive in the present.</p>
<p>BESSEL VAN DER KOLK, MD, is a clinical psychiatrist who has studied the impact and resolution of trauma on the minds and brains of children and adults since 1982. He is professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and medical director of the Trauma Center in Boston. <p>Full catering is included in your ticket price. There will be two sessions, morning and afternoon, with a 3 course buffet lunch in between. Morning and afternoon teas and coffee will be served during the breaks.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Eminent psychiatrist Dr Dan Siegel is a brilliant speaker and teacher, who through sincerity and authenticity, animatedly educates us on his ground-breaking discoveries regarding where mind, brain and relationships meet. This life changing two-day workshop explains how unresolved developmental trauma can impact not only our relationship with ourselves, but our relationship with those we love the most. <p>Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. is currently clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. <p style="text-align: justify;">In this two-day workshop Janina will be helping us to understand how traumatic attachment in childhood affects not only how we feel in relationships but also the ability of the nervous system to tolerate proximity to others. This workshop opens up a deeper understanding of how trauma impacts attachments to others and how to work relationally and somatically to create a greater sense of safety in our relationships.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Janina Fisher, PhD is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Instructor at the Trauma Center, an outpatient clinic and research centre founded by Bessel van der Kolk. Known for her expertise as both a therapist and consultant, she is also past president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, an EMDR International Association Credit Provider, a faculty member of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, and a former Instructor, Harvard Medical School.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dr. Fisher has been an invited speaker at the Cape Cod Institute, Harvard Medical School Conference Series, the EMDR International Association Annual Conference, University of Wisconsin, University of Westminster in London, the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europe, and the Esalen Institute.
